Voters to decide between Graham, Norman in Senate primary runoff

SOUTH CAROLINA — Voters will decide on Tuesday whether Sen. Darline Graham or Rep. Ralph Norman will represent the Republican Party in the race for U.S. Senate this November.

Graham and Norman advanced to a runoff after an Aug. 11 special primary election, following the death of late-Sen. Lindsey Graham.

Darline Graham, who is Lindsey Graham’s sister, received an endorsement from President Donald Trump, and she also has the support of South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott and Rep. Russell Fry. She was appointed to fill the rest of Graham’s term after his death.

Norman has the support of former South Carolina governors Mark Sanford and Nikki Haley. Norman has served in the U.S. House of Representatives for South Carolina’s 5th District since 2017.

In the Aug. 11 primary election, Graham finished in first place with 33% of the vote. Norman picked up 25% of the primary vote.

With the shortened campaign time, one political scientist told Channel 9 that it’s anybody’s race.

“I wouldn’t bet either candidate is going to win,” said Scott Huffmon, a professor of political science with Winthrop University. “I wouldn’t bet blowout or neck and neck because there are avenues for each and there’s no way to tell who will get out of bed and go vote.”

According to South Carolina’s latest numbers, more than 63,000 voters cast a ballot during the runoff’s early voting period.
