WATCH: Video appears to show CMS bus driver on phone while driving

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte mother has pulled her son off a CMS school bus until she's confident the driver will keep her eyes on the road.

A seventh grader at Southwest Middle School took video on his phone last week from the front seat on his bus.

The video shows the driver using her phone.  Both hands are on the phone and not the steering wheel.  The driver is holding the phone, scrolling, tapping the screen and not keeping her eyes on the road.

Channel 9 showed the video to several people outside the school.

"That to me is the stupidest thing you can do while driving," said parent Paul Cotter.  "To do it while you're driving with a bus load of students under your care is just inexcusable and totally irresponsible."

Franklin Butler understands how frightening this can be for parents to see.

"Kinda reckless. I wouldn't want my kid on the bus if the driver was doing something like that," Butler said.

It's not clear how long the driver was using her phone while the bus was moving.

CMS sent Channel 9 a statement saying: "CMS transportation takes the safety and security of the students seriously. It is aware of the incident mentioned. They are investigating it as they would all matters that come to their attention."

On Thursday afternoon, Channel 9 went to one of the stops that specific bus makes in Steele Creek and noticed there was a different driver on that route.

Parents said they're glad that seventh grader was concerned enough to do something.

Channel 9 asked if that driver is still on the road and hasn't yet received a response.
