Freezing temps causing water mains to break across Charlotte area

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Below-freezing temperatures are causing water pipes to burst all across Charlotte.

There were seven breaks Thursday and there could be even more Friday, as temps dipped under 10 degrees by early morning.

Part of Providence Road was closed for repairs near Queens overnight and crews were pouring concrete over the repaired areas around 7 a.m.

Experts said temperatures are so low that the water inside the pipes is freezing and expanding, causing the pipes to burst. They're concerned that with these record low temperatures, more breaks could happen Friday.

By 7:45 a.m., crews had finished repairs and reopened Providence Road.

All lanes of Wendover Road were closed between Providence Road and Vernon Drive Thursday afternoon due to a water main break.

A river of water rolled down the street as road crews worked to repair the break. Dozens of homeowners in the area lost water as crews made repairs.

Jennifer Frost with Charlotte Water said at 3 p.m. Thursday that Wendover will be closed at least another four to six hours.

"I haven't been inside yet, but I'm going to go see if the water's running. I'm hoping that it is," said homeowner Allison Desalvo.

The road will remain closed until further notice as crews work to repair the break, officials said.

Charlotte Water said frigid temperatures caused the water and soil to expand breaking seven different water mains from north Charlotte, to uptown, to Myers Park.
