More than 1,000 Wendy's restaurants affected by hack, officials say

Hackers stole customers' credit and debit card information at 1,025 of U.S. Wendy's restaurants, far more than it originally thought, Wendy's officials said.

The hamburger chain said Thursday that hackers obtained card numbers, names, expiration dates and codes on the cards, beginning late last fall.

Some customers' cards were used to make fraudulent purchases at other stores. Wendy's Co. urged customers to check their accounts for any fraudulent purchases.

The Dublin, Ohio, company first announced in January that it was investigating a possible hack. It said in May that malware was found in fewer than 300 restaurants. About a month later, it said two types of malware were found and the number of restaurants affected was "considerably higher."

There are more than 5,700 Wendy's restaurants in the U.S.

Wendy's said Thursday that it would post a list of affected restaurants on its website. As of Thursday afternoon, the list hadn't been posted because of "technical difficulties."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
