What's ahead for Fifth Third's branch rollout in Charlotte (Charlotte Business Journal)

CHARLOTTE — Fifth Third Bancorp is moving ahead on its widespread retail expansion — with plans to add more Charlotte-area branches in the next year or two. The bank added just over 15 branches this year throughout the Carolinas.

Cincinnati-based Fifth Third has opened five branches here this year, with another one opening in Blakeney on Dec. 31. It plans to open another five or six local branches over the next couple of years, said Tommy Lloyd, retail executive for Fifth Third’s mid-Atlantic region. Since late 2019, Fifth Third has opened 14 branches in this region, he said.

The bank is eyeing the third quarter of 2022 for more branch openings here, Lloyd said. Potential locations include the West End and Steele Creek. In general, about 25% to 30% of Fifth Third’s branches are in low- to moderate-income areas.

“We want to meet our customers where they are, and our idea is we really want to make connections between our locations,” Lloyd said. “Whether Covid or not, the need for financial services is probably greater than ever, and the fact that we have been not only opening branches but that all of our financial centers have been open has been a tremendous benefit to our customers because it’s given them an option and a choice when they needed us.”
