CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A U-Haul driver has been charged after a woman was killed and a baby was critically hurt in a 4-car crash in west Charlotte Sunday evening.
Robert Shields Jr., 47, has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The crash happened just after 5:30 p.m. near the intersection of Billy Graham Parkway and Morris Field Drive.
When officers got to the scene, they found a heavily damaged Hyundai Accent, a Dodge Ram pickup truck, a Ford Fusion and an overturned U-Haul truck.
Charlotte Fire responded to the crash and helped remove three people who were trapped in the Hyundai.
The passenger, 21-year-old Jada Moore, died at the scene. An infant was taken to the hospital in critical condition and the driver was also hurt, but is expected to be OK.

CMPD’s preliminary investigation revealed all four cars were coming to a stop light when the U-Haul hit them.
Authorities said failure to reduce speed appears to be a contributing factor for Shields.
Police said the road was closed for hours while officers investigated the scene.
