No charges filed after woman hit, killed by van in downtown Davidson

DAVIDSON, N.C. — No charges will be filed against a driver after a woman was hit and killed by a van in downtown Davidson last month, officials say.

Officers were called to the intersection of Main Street and Concord Road in downtown Davidson at 1 p.m. on June 17 for reports of a person hit by a vehicle. Suzanne Younts, 64, was struck and died from her injuries, officials said.

Main Street from Jackson Street to Concord Road was closed during the hours long investigation. Channel 9 crews could see investigators focused on a white van in the road.

That van belonged to a landscaping company, and it was towed away from the scene.

On Tuesday, the town of Davidson announced that no charges will be filed against the driver of the van.

According to officials, the Davidson police investigation found no criminal offense or traffic violation on the driver’s part. The town also said that the District Attorney’s Office agreed with the department’s findings.

The investigation reportedly found that Younts was hit about 18 feet north of the crosswalk after walking between two vehicles stopped at the red light in the southbound lane of Main Street.

People who live nearby told Channel 9 that it is common for people to just cross the road in the busy stretch of downtown Davidson.

“The investigation of a traffic fatality is difficult for all involved and we are grateful for the witnesses who came forward following the tragic death of Mrs. Younts,” said Davidson Police Chief Penny Dunn. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Suzanne’s family and many others impacted by this tragedy.”

The scene was near a spot where another woman died in 2016.
