Woman says firework hit her in head after ‘war with fireworks'

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — A woman told Channel 9 that a firework hit her in the head and exploded into flames outside her home Monday night.

Angela June showed reporter Ken Lemon the debris left Tuesday from what she called a “war with fireworks.”

“They were doing the fireworks, shooting back and forth at each other,” June said.

Witnesses said some people drove around the Highland Community and launched mortar-style fireworks from PVC pipes.

One of those shells hit June in the back of her head as she stood in the driveway of her home.

She said it burst into flames, but did not leave a scar.

“It is scary to me. I was nervous. I didn’t know what to think,” June said.

She lost hearing for a few seconds. The explosives damaged a car in the driveway and dented another car.

“It traumatized me for a little bit,” she said.

June called for an ambulance, but the EMS workers also found themselves under fire. People in the cars aimed fireworks at the ambulances.

“It was sort of a mini war zone,” Director of Gaston County EMS, Mark Lamphiear, said.

Fireworks were even thrown under the ambulances. The ambulances weren’t damaged, but the EMS director said it could have been very dangerous.

"(It) has the potential to delay our emergency medical care to the patient that called us in the first place," Lamphiear said.

Police are searching for at least three cars involved in shooting the fireworks on the Fourth of July.
