HICKORY, N.C. — A fire started at a Hickory senior apartment building when a resident smoked in bed while using oxygen, officials said.
Firefighters said one elderly woman with life-threatening injuries was taken to Catawba Valley Medical Center and then airlifted to Baptist Medical Center.
Firefighters received the call around 11 a.m. from a medical alert system that a resident activated.
The fire caused moderate damage at the West Hickory Senior Apartments on 17th Street.
No one else was injured, officials said.
