KANNAPOLIS, N.C. — Cabarrus County health officials believe a woman who died from the West Nile virus was likely bit near her home in Kannapolis.
They didn't release her name, but said she had previous health problems.
An environmental specialist for the county said West Nile has been in the area for at least 10 years and is most dangerous to the elderly.
Chrystal Swinger said the county begins treating breeding grounds in the spring, and goes back to problem areas every four to six weeks.
"I have to really make sure I'm looking for what I know is a public health problem," Swinger said. "But also help people to get rid of mosquitoes, just in general."
Swinger said residents should rid their yards of standing water, and wear bug spray.
