CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — Thick smoke poured off the side of Baker’s Mountain in Catawba County Monday afternoon because of a woods fire.
Chopper 9 Skyzoom flew over the fire, spotting orange flames on the ground. Officials said the fire broke out around 3:45 p.m. Monday on Bakers Mountain.
Channel 9 spotted crews using a helicopter to get water from a local reservoir to try and put out the fire.
Since the fire started, about 150 firefighters have been involved in attacking the fire across rugged terrain.
"Incident leadership hopes to have total containment by late this (Tuesday) afternoon. However, the weather may be a factor in that plan," Karyn Yaussy with Catawba County Emergency Services said Tuesday.
The Catawba County Parks Manager said the fire is not inside the park.
"No residential structures are at risk but due to heavy smoke residents in the area with respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic bronchitis or COPD are cautioned to remain indoors with the windows and doors closed and their air conditioning running," Yaussy said.
Firefighters stopped working overnight, and haven't said how far the fire has spread.
The fire had burned 40 acres near Bakers Mountain Park by 11 a.m. Tuesday. The park has been evacuated until the fire is out.
