WSOC-TV anchor John Paul named NCAB 'Anchor of the Year'

WSOC-TV morning anchor John Paul was honored as the 2016 Anchor of the Year by the North Carolina Association of Broadcasters. The award was announced during the NCAB annual convention.

Paul joined the WSOC-TV Eyewitness News team as anchor and reporter in July 2015 from the Cox Media Group station WHIO-TV in Dayton, Ohio. He was promoted to morning co-anchor of Eyewitness News Daybreak in October 2015.

Eyewitness News Daybreak is the number one morning newscast for the Charlotte DMA according to The Nielsen Media Company. Paul also anchors Eyewitness News Midday.

Paul covered the Pope’s visit to the United States from Philadelphia. He has most recently investigated safety concerns with daycare centers and aging elevators while delivering daily enterprise stories.

“John’s been a terrific addition to our team,” said News Director Julie Szulczewski. “He is always uncovering stories that are investigative and unique.”

Also, on behalf of the NCAB, Joe Pomilla, WSOC-TV Vice President and General Manager presented former WSOC-TV Vice President and General Manager, Lee Armstrong, with the Wade H. Hargrove Community Leadership Award. This award recognizes her significant contributions towards the communities she has served. Armstrong worked for Cox Television for over fifteen years in Atlanta, Dayton and Charlotte.

“I’m honored to be able to present this award to my predecessor,” said Joe Pomilla, WSOC-TV Vice President and General Manager. “Lee was instrumental in a leadership role during her tenure at WSOC-TV/WAXN-TV for many community events and television programs along with outreach campaigns including the region’s largest school supply drive.”

The North Carolina Association of Broadcasters Annual Station Awards acknowledge the highest standards of reporting, community service and production creativity. NCAB is widely recognized as one of the top associations for broadcasters in the nation in terms of legislative victories, education, services, benefits and legal assistance.
