More student fighting videos surface on YouTube

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Videos posted to YouTube this week show violent fights between Charlotte students, while adults watch.

The videos say all the fights happened in the Clanton Park neighborhood of Charlotte.

The videos are violent and show young girls brutally fighting each other while others cheer. Many of those watching, including adults, are seen recording the fights with their cell phones.

The neighborhood is home to many students of Reid Park Academy.

School Counselor Wanda Webb said she recognizes some of the students in the background of the videos watching the fights.

School leaders may not be able to control it, but they aren't ignoring it.

"The children are well aware of them," Principal Mary Sturge said. "And so we discuss the videos."

Sturge said the approach goes hand-in-hand with the school's anti-bullying campaign.

"Rather than focus on the fight, we talk about what's happening around the fight," she said.  "How can you be an instrument for change?"

Sturge said the discussion is necessary because children carry these images into school each day and it affects some more than others.

At no point did anyone involved in the videos  call police.

Sturge said students must learn to respond to similar scenes by alerting officials.

“We have to acknowledge that it exists and then put those positive pieces in place,” she said.
