Several vehicles, including two Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department patrol cars and a Charlotte Fire Department truck, got caught in rising water.
The patrol cars got stuck in high water on Trailer Drive at about 4 a.m. The officers got on the roofs of their cars after the water began to rise and then waited for it to recede. Once the water level went down, they called a wrecker to retrieve the vehicles.

Basnight said the department was responding to a fire alarm at about 4 a.m., during the height of the storm, when the truck got caught. The rising water caused the brakes to fail and the truck then went into the deeper water, Basnight said.
The water continued to rise and went into the truck's exhaust system, causing it to stall.
The truck is currently at the city garage, where mechanics are assessing the damage.
Basnight said the department had responded to 14 flooding incidents by 5 a.m.
Roadways on which flooding problems were reported include East Boulevard, Dilworth Road, the intersection of Kenilworth Avenue and Romany Road, the intersection of 7th Street and Charlottetowne Avenue and the intersection of Freedom Drive and Berryhill Road.

The cluster of showers and storms also caused major problems on Independence Boulevard. The right two lanes near Interstate 277 were closed at about 4 a.m. because of flooding. The closures caused delays during the Tuesday morning commute.
North Carolina Department of Transportation officials said they will check the drains in the area Tuesday so that flooding won't be a concern in the event of more rain.
Scattered storms are expected to bring more rain Tuesday, meteorologist Keith Monday said. Flash flooding is possible because the ground is already saturated.
