CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — A person with knowledge of the decision says tight end Jeremy Shockey has agreed to a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers, providing a potential boost for the NFL's worst offense.
Shockey and the Panthers came to terms on Thursday, the person told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal has not been signed.
Shockey, who was released by New Orleans last week, wrote on his Facebook page that he is headed to Carolina. "Looks like I'm signing with Carolina. Time for the Next chapter. This is a great opportunity for me, and I am excited to play football. Lets hope we all have the chance to play this season."
The 30-year-old Shockey will be reunited with Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski, who was his position coach at the University of Miami.
New Panthers coach Ron Rivera put an emphasis on acquiring a pass-catching tight end. The flamboyant Shockey could be that guy, although he has been slowed by injuries the past few seasons.
Shockey was released by the Saints in the offseason and recently visited the Panthers and the Dolphins. He had spent six previous seasons with the Giants.
In nine seasons, Shockey has recorded 510 catches for 5,688 yards and 33 TDs.
