SALISBURY, N.C.,None — A police dog attacked a 5-year-old boy at Koontz Elementary School and now the child's family said they will sue both the school and the police department.
Five-year-old Nazir Lowe spent the day with his grandfather and is recovering at home after a school-sponsored K-9 demonstration went terribly wrong.
Friday afternoon, Salisbury police introduced their K-9 named Baks to a group of kindergarten students.
The kids were allowed to pet the leashed dog and Nazir took his turn, but when he walked away Baks pounced.
Fifteen stitches were used to close the wound on Nazir's neck and part of his left earlobe was ripped off.
Salisbury's police chief said Baks has been a model K-9 until now. Nazir's family said the school never told them about the planned demonstration.
Monday, Koontz Elementary School's principal told Channel 9, "My apologies and thoughts and prayers go out to the student, the family and the officer. Police say the dog will be re-evaluated to see if it's fit to return to duty."
Despite his injuries, Nazir is expected to return to school Tuesday. The family is calling on the police department to put the dog to sleep.
