MONROE, N.C.,None — Police in Monroe have arrested a sex offender who parents reported was touching himself in front of children at a bus stop.
Forty-two-year-old Robert Angelo Thompson was arrested Tuesday after a resident on Maurice Street reported the incident to police.
Police said Thompson was a registered sex offender, but living at an unregistered address.
"Obviously, it alarmed us that this was going on with children in close proximity," said Lt. TJ Goforth.
Thompson was staying with the mother of his child, at a home near a daycare and school. Police arrested him on charges of failure to register.
Eyewitness News also dug into Thompson's criminal history and discovered his first arrest came when he was just 17 years old for indecent exposure.
State DOC records also show Thompson was convicted in 1993 on rape, robbery and second degree murder charges.
He was sentenced to 40 years in prison, but was released last year after only serving 15.
Thompson remains out on bond following his most recent arrest.
