Principal uses social media to keep in touch with parents

WAXHAW, N.C. — One local principal is taking a digital approach to keep in touch with parents.

They're able to ask him questions, express concerns and get school information at their fingertips.

Cuthbertson Middle School Principal Kevin Nesteruk had the foresight to start a school Facebook page six years ago -- a year before the Union County school district instructed all of its 53 schools to for one simple reason.

“Just a way to communicate with parents on a daily basis,” Nesteruk said. “Everyone started switching over to smartphones, so it was a way to have the information at your fingertips."

The school has two Facebook pages: the “friend” page Nesteruk started and a “like" page, managed by the school's media specialist.

Both post info on bus schedules, back to school info, athletic events, highlight students and staff accomplishments and more.

Why keep them both? Because some parents are more comfortable knowing they can go straight to the principal.

Nesteruk messages with up to 10 parents a week with questions or concerns and more than 1,300 through the profile itself.

District leaders commend Nesteruk for his commitment to keeping parents informed and for being accessible.

“It's another outlet to keep parents and kids informed about what's going on in the schools and it's helpful,” parent Mike Perna said.

Although, some prefer the official school email for updates, which they still get once a week.

“It's more direct and specific instead of random thoughts that everyone has,” parent Sarah Geyer said.
