ROWAN COUNTY, N.C.,None — Channel 9 has learned that several men convicted of sex crimes are living close to a Rowan County school and a day care.
Eyewitness News made the discovery after Salisbury police raided an apartment on South Caldwell Street for drugs.
Police arrested Bryan Oneal Taylor on drug charges, but Eyewitness News learned he is also a sex offender and was living within 1,000 feet of Salisbury High School.
"It doesn't exactly make you feel safe sending children off to school," said resident Cyndie Badgio.
Taylor posted bail on the drug charges but wasn't charged for living too close to a school.
"The proper authorities were notified," said Salisbury Capt. Shela Lingle. "The Rowan County Sheriff's Office handles that."
Eyewitness News went to the Sheriff's Office for an explanation.
"The person we had doing the sex offender registration did not catch that," said Capt. John Sifford. "We are currently doing an internal investigation."
Adrian Green is a registered sex offender living near a Spencer day care.
Sifford told Channel 9 a deputy searched Green's address on MapQuest and didn't see the day care nearby.
The Sheriff's Office changed its policy on tracking offenders on Wednesday.
"Any time there is a registration or address change, an officer will go to that location and physically make sure there are no violations," said Sifford.
Taylor no longer lives on South Caldwell Street.
Deputies said he moved after the arrest, however, they are still investigating whether he could still be charged with violating the law.
As of Thursday, deputies were still trying to contact Green.
Officers said there is a possibility he could be staying with family, and therefore, he would be allowed to live there.
