Relative's Death Resurfaces After Motel Shooting

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — Just before 7 a.m. Saturday, police said a man was shot while trying to help his girlfriend after she was robbed behind the Country Hearth Inn Motel.

The victim is expected to be OK, but the crime brought back horrible memories for the family of another victim.

This May will mark the two-year anniversary of the murder of Larry Broughton, who was working as a clerk at the same motel. He was shot during an attempted robbery there, police said.

Another employee, Manjula Patel, was also working at the time and was shot. The shooting left her paralyzed.

Joe Baldock, who is Broughton's son-in-law, said Saturday's shooting brought back the crime from two years ago.

"[It] just brings back memories," he said. "Mr. Broughton, of course, was my father-in-law. I never realized how much he meant ‘til it happened."

Broughton's case remains unsolved.

The circumstances in Saturday's incident at the motel were different: Police said they think the suspect in Saturday's shooting and robbery knew the victims.

Still, Baldock hopes the crime and investigation will bring renewed attention to his father-in-law's case.

"We really need to get this solved and find out who did it, because somebody out there is getting away, literally with murder, and it has to stop," he said.

Detectives said they are still actively investigating Broughton's case.
