Sources: Bowles not running for governor

RALEIGH, N.C.,None — According to Democratic Party sources speaking to WRAL in Raleigh, former UNC system president Erskine Bowles will not be seeking the party’s nomination for governor this year.

According to a recent poll by Public Policy Polling, Bowles fared best against the GOP candidate, former Charlotte mayor Pat McCrory. In that poll, Bowles only trailed McCrory by two points.

Many Democratic leaders had sought Bowles' candidacy after Gov. bev Perdue announced she would not seek re-election.

Earlier this week, current Charlotte mayor Anthony Foxx announced he would not be seeking the party’s nomination either.

So far, the only Democratic candidates who have committed to the race are Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton and Rep. Bill Faison.

In the PPP poll, Dalton trailed McCrory by about 15 points. Faison trails the former Charlotte governor by 19 points, the poll states.
