MOUNTAIN REST, S.C. — A man has died after a fall along a hiking trail in the South Carolina mountains.
Oconee County Coroner Karl Addis said a 39-year-old Spartanburg County man died Sunday night after falling along the Chattooga River Trail in Mountain Rest.
Addis said in a news release that the man appeared to have been walking the trail toward a road when he fell about 15 feet off a ledge. The coroner said the ground was slick from rain that had fallen Sunday afternoon.
The man's name has not been released.
Addis said the man and a female friend had hiked the trail earlier Sunday and planned to camp with some friends. The coroner said the woman had gone to their car to get some items for camping.
An autopsy is planned.
