RALEIGH, N.C.,None — More than 100 students attending the Youth In Government conference at the downtown Raleigh North Carolina Sheraton fell ill, complaining of stomach discomfort and vomiting on Saturday.
Most of the students who were ill were isolated and treated before returning to conference activities. About 150 students were treated; four students were taken to the hospital.
Fifteen students from the YMCA of Greater Charlotte were in attendance. The students were checked out by a doctor and returned to the conference.
Parents of the students who were sick were called by conference leaders.
The Wake EMS are working with Wake County Epidemiological team to investigate the cause of the illness.
Conference leaders said it could possibly be food poisoning. No other guests at the hotel reported symptoms.
The conference is a leadership event for high school students sponsored by the YMCA. About 1,000 students, from around North Carolina, were in attendance at the four-day event.
