Plague-infested prairie dogs close parts of Colorado

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — Some prairie dog colonies in Colorado have tested positive for plague, prompting health officials to close some parts of the state.

Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, Prairie Gateway Open Space in Commerce City and unpaved parking areas at Dick's Sporting Goods Park have been closed by the Tri-County Health Department.

"Plague in prairie dog colonies is common in Colorado and can be managed safely with insecticide to kill the fleas that spread the disease," John M. Douglas Jr., executive director of Tri-County Health Department, said in a statement. "Our partners have voluntarily closed these locations to prevent any humans or pets from wandering into the affected areas."

There have not been any cases of the plague in humans, health officials said.

The wildlife refuge said it is closed Wednesday after there were two confirmed cases of sylvatic plague in prairie dogs, officials said. Park workers are applying insecticide, a white powder that can be seen atop prairie dog burrows. Officials will decide on reopening the refuge after the treatments are complete.

While postgame festivities, including a fireworks show, have been canceled, the Colorado Rapids will still play their game against the Montreal Impact Saturday at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, officials said. Parking at the arena will be restricted to paved areas only.

"At this time, the post-game fireworks display will not be rescheduled," team officials said in a release. "Our highest priority is the health and safety of our fans, staff, and local community."
