PHILADELPHIA — A Sumatran orangutan is expecting its second baby, the Philadelphia Zoo said Saturday.
Tua is expected to give birth this summer, the zoo said.
Tua, 24, and mate Sugriwa are parents to Batu, who was born in 2009.
The Sumatran orangutan is critically endangered. There are only a few thousand still living in the wild. The majority of their habitat has been destroyed because of deforestation.
Orangutan pregnancies typically last nine months and the infant will nurse for up to five years. Because of this, the female Sumatran orangutan may go nine years between pregnancies.
Philadelphia Zoo is pleased to announce that Tua, our 24-year-old Sumatran orangutan, is pregnant and the baby is expected this summer!
