AMES, Iowa — A boating accident involving five members of Iowa State University’s Crew Club claimed two lives Sunday morning, authorities have confirmed.
Update 6:05 p.m. ET March 29: The body of a second Iowa State University Crew Club member was recovered from Little Wall Lake on Monday morning following a Sunday boating accident, authorities said.
Hamilton County Sheriff Douglas Timmons confirmed during a Monday morning news conference that firefighters from the Ventura Fire Department used an advanced sonar imaging system to find the second body, which was recovered by the Story County Dive Team after the Iowa Department of Natural Resources made the identification around 10 a.m., The Des Moines Register reported.
The search was suspended at around 9 p.m. local time Sunday and resumed Monday morning, the newspaper reported.
Original report: According to a university-issued news release, three students were rescued from the water, the body of a fourth was recovered by a dive team and the fifth remained missing Sunday evening.
Hamilton County Sheriff Doug Timmons told The Des Moines Register that bystanders who witnessed the boating accident on Little Wall Lake assisted deputies with the rescues.
“We’ve also had several heroes that live in the buildings out here, came out and help the individuals,” Timmons told the newspaper.
All three rescued students were treated and released from Mary Greeley Medical Center, the university confirmed, but none of the students involved in the accident has been identified, the Register reported.
“The Iowa State community is heartbroken to learn of this tragic accident at Little Wall Lake,” Iowa State President Wendy Wintersteen stated. “At this time, we are focused on providing support to club members, their families and friends. We ask that everyone keep them in their thoughts during this very difficult time.”
