SEATTLE — As more people turn to online retailers amid the coronavirus outbreak, Seattle-based Amazon announced that it is hiring 100,000 more workers nationwide.

According to The Associated Press, the news came Monday as the company said it is “seeing a significant increase in demand."

”We are opening 100,000 new full- and part-time positions across the U.S. in our fulfillment centers and delivery network to meet the surge in demand from people relying on Amazon’s service during this stressful time, particularly those most vulnerable to being out in public," Dave Clark, Amazon’s senior vice president of worldwide operations, wrote in a blog post on the retailer’s website.

Hourly Amazon employees in the U.S. also will receive an extra $2 per hour through April, the AP reported. The retailer already paid a minimum hourly wage of $15, according to the blog post.
