The Martin County Sheriff’s Office shared photos of deputies at the scene on Thursday and later removed them from social media. The remains were found on a beach along Hutchinson Island.

Sheriff Willian Snyder told WPTV that the hurricane’s winds churned up the sand, revealing the remains of at least six bodies.

Officers said the remains are believed to be from a Native American burial ground located in the same area.

“Detectives are working diligently to preserve and carefully remove the remains that are exposed with the utmost care and respect,” MCSO said in the now-deleted Facebook post.

Deputies said the remains will be taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office before being given to the Florida Department of State’s archeological research bureau.
