According to the Porter County Sheriff’s Office, the department’s bomb squad was called to Union Township Middle School in Valparaiso on Wednesday, the Northwest Indiana Times reported.

Shortly after 12 p.m. CDT, a school resource officer at the school learned a possible explosive device was in a student’s backpack, WFLD-TV reported.

The officer and administrators moved students to other classrooms and secured the area until the bomb squad arrived, Porter County Sheriff’s Office Cpl. Benjamin McFalls told the Times.

“They discovered and safely removed two improvised explosive devices,” McFalls told the newspaper.

The student was taken into custody and faces a charge of possessing a destructive device, a Level 5 felony, according to police.

Union Township Middle School Principal Joshua Goeringer was not immediately available for comment on Thursday afternoon, the Times reported.
