Gorham Deputy Police Chief Michael Nault said the crash occurred around 6:30 p.m. EDT, the Portland Press Herald reported.

The boy, whose name is being withheld, died at the scene, according to WTMW.

Nault said the girl, whose name was also being withheld, was alone in the vehicle, the Press Herald reported.

In Maine, residents must be at least 15 years old to apply for a learner’s permit to drive, and 16 to apply for a driver’s license, the newspaper reported.

Nault did not say why the girl was driving the vehicle by herself.

The case remains under investigation, WTMW reported.
