Sen. Cory Booker tests positive for COVID-19

U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, D-New Jersey, confirmed Sunday evening that he has tested positive for COVID-19.

Booker, 52, who is fully vaccinated, confirmed the diagnosis via Twitter after first experiencing symptoms Saturday.

“I’m beyond grateful to have received two doses of vaccine and, more recently, a booster -- I’m certain that without them I would be doing much worse,” Booker wrote, without detailing the severity of his illness.

According to a Johns Hopkins University tally, cumulative COVID-19 cases in the U.S. neared 51 million Sunday night, including nearly 3.1 million cases and more than 34,500 virus-related deaths reported within the past 28 days. More than 806,000 COVID-19 deaths have been reported nationwide since the pandemic began.

Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said Sunday that the next few weeks will see severe stress on hospital systems due to the increase of the omicron variant, NBC News reported.
