Snorkels sold at Costco recalled due to drowning risk

Officials are recalling snorkels sold exclusively at Costco after determining that a valve on the devices can leak and allow in water, posing a drowning hazard.

Huish Outdoors issued the recall Wednesday after receiving 13 reports of its Oceanic Adult Dry Top Snorkels leaking, according to a notice from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. About 76,000 snorkels were sold at Costco locations nationwide and the wholesale warehouse’s online store between February 2021 and July 2021.

In a notice sent in July to Costco customers who bought the snorkels, officials with Oceanic said they had learned of some instances in which “the lower purge valve on the snorkel may let in water during use.” They urged people who noticed the issue to stop using the snorkels immediately.

On Wednesday, CPSC officials said one injury related to the recall has been reported, in which a customer who tripped after a snorkel leaked suffered minor cuts.

The snorkels under recall are white and gray with a blue dry splash guard at the top and a blue plastic housing fitted around an oval shaped, clear bottom purge. They have batch numbers above the flexible gray tubing. The batch numbers under recall are:
