MILWAUKEE — A man suspected in a homicide was killed after leading Milwaukee police on a vehicle chase before opening fire in a busy downtown entertainment district, authorities said.
Milwaukee Assistant Chief Nicole J. Waldner said during a news conference that the 47-year-old man was killed and a woman who was a bystander was wounded by the gunfire, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported.
Waldner said the chase began around 10:50 p.m. CDT Friday after officers attempted to apprehend the man, according to the newspaper. The chase ended in the city’s entertainment district when the man exited his truck, which had been disabled, and opened fire.

Police returned fire and the man, who was from Milwaukee, suffered fatal injuries, WITI-TV reported. The man’s weapon was recovered, police said.
The bystander was identified as a 22-year-old woman from Hudson, Wisconsin, according to the television station. She was taken to an area hospital.
Police said it was unclear whose gunfire struck the woman, WITI reported.
A video posted on social media captured some of the moments downtown. The video shows at least five police cars following the suspect’s vehicle before multiple shots were fired, the Journal-Sentinel reported.

The eight officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative duty, which is normal protocol, according to WTMJ-TV.
