MARATHON, Fla. — An employee at a hotel in the Florida Keys was arrested after investigators said she kidnapped a child.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that deputies were called to the Fairfield Inn & Suites in Marathon at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday because a woman said her child had been kidnapped. When deputies arrived, a hotel employee told them that Zita Gasperik, who also works at the hotel, had taken her 16-month-old child without her permission.
The mother told deputies that Gasperik had taken her child to the breakfast room, but when she went to find them she discovered both were gone, WPLG reported.
Deputies found Gasperik driving on the highway, and said the child was in her lap and not properly restrained in a car seat. The child was not hurt.
The child’s mother told deputies that Gasperik had told her how cute the baby was and took a picture. Gasperik is also accused of telling the child’s mother, “this baby is mine today,” deputies said in the news release.
