ROCK HILL, S.C.,None — Winthrop has fired its men's basketball head coach on Monday, according to Tom Hickman, school athletic director.
In a release the school said Randy Peele has been relieved of his duties following back-to-back losing seasons.
The Eagles lost 75-55 Thursday to VMI in the semis of the Big South Conference tournament and finished the season 12-20.
It was the Eagles' first 20-loss season since 1997-98.
Peele was 77-82 in five seasons as head coach. Under Peele's watch the team captured two Big South Conference championships in 2008 and 2010, and with it, NCAA tournament berths.
"We all celebrated the team's achievements in 2008 and 2010 with the Big South Tournament Championships. However, over the past couple of years our men's basketball program has underachieved and that is distressing," Hickman said. Sometimes there is a need to provide a spark for a program and that usually comes in the form of a change in leadership."
