MOORESVILLE, N.C. — Deputies arrested Angie Funderburk, 47, on animal cruelty charges connected to nearly 200 cats found inside her home. Animal control officers described finding disturbing conditions inside the home.
"Every door you opened, it was just multiple cats. Feces were all over the floors and the walls," said Iredell County Animal Control Director, Chris Royal. "(The cats) had runny eyes, one of them was just covered in ringworm."
The cats with the worst issues were euthanized to prevent the spread of disease to others at the shelter.
"We have space for 65 cats here, we just took on 149," said Royal. As a result, we saw cat pens, which usually contain just a cat or two, packed with five or six cats each.
"We are overcrowded ... but these tight quarters are a lot better than the conditions they were living in," Royal said.
Angie Funderburk was charged with felonyanimal cruelty, along with a misdemeanor failure to provide vaccine proof and instigating cruelty to animals.
She was booked at Iredell County Jail on $10,000 bond. She's scheduled for a court appearance Tuesday.
Iredell County Animal Control said it has gotten help from rescues and shelters in other counties. Since Funderburk signed the cats over to authorities, they are available for adoption to anyone who wants them.
