SPRING FORECAST: March ends drier than usual, warm April ahead

CHARLOTTE, N.C — Although March brought a slight deficit in rainfall for the Charlotte area, temperatures will finish up right where they typically are for the month.

The average March temperature, including highs and lows, is 51 degrees. Thanks to a major swing in temps the past four weeks, March 2017’s average hit 52 degrees.

Six straight mornings with lows below freezing, combined with two 80-degree days, helped even out that average. Charlotte finished the month tied for the 52nd warmest March on record.

Despite a late effort to add rainfall to the month, March 2017 recorded 2.71 inches, well behind the average of 4.01 inches. This month also brought snow to the Charlotte metro area, adding up to 1.1 inches at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

We are a third of the way through the 2017 year, and so far the rainfall deficit for the city of Charlotte is only an inch. Thursday's update to the drought monitor showed only abnormally dry conditions across Mecklenburg County.

Looking ahead to April, temperatures are expected to stay on the warmer side. In the latest update from the Climate Prediction Center, temperatures for April 2017 are forecast to stay above average. Average highs in the month reach the low 70s, with lows in the upper 50s.

Typically, the month of April brings 3.04 inches of rainfall to the Charlotte area. The CPC outlook for precipitation shows a good chance of average rain for the Queen City.

Heading into the first weekend of the new month, temperatures are expected to stay above average, reaching the upper 70s with plenty of sunshine.
