WEATHER OUTLOOK: Warmest April on record; May looking wet, cool

CHARLOTTE, N.C — A combination of above-average highs and lows helped boost April 2017 to the warmest April on record for the city of Charlotte.

The average temperature for the past 30 days was 65.4 degrees, beating out a 121-year record of 64.9 degrees set in 1896.

Three record-high lows were set for the early mornings of April 28, 29 and 30, as temperatures only dropped into the upper 60s and low 70s.

April 2017 also finished as the 16th wettest for the Queen City, with 5.54 inches. A late-month storm that brought localized flooding and widespread tree damage soaked the city with 3.34 inches of rain in two days alone. Overall, Charlotte stayed above average for precipitation for the month by 2.5 inches.

Looking ahead to the month of May, conditions are forecast to stay wet and slightly cooler. The latest Climate Prediction Center outlook, updated April 30, showed the Carolinas staying wetter than average through the next 30 days.

Typically, Charlotte records 3.18 inches of rain for the month of May. Already one day in, the city is sitting at .29 inches due to Monday’s storm.

Much of the upper Midwest and East Coast will stay at or slightly below average for temperatures heading into the upcoming month. High temps typically range from 76 to 82 degrees over the month, with overnight lows between 51 and 60 degrees.
