"If we get more books into the hands of more children and teens throughout our community, get them reading and get them succeeding in school, then that provides a level playing field for everyone in our community," said Cordelia Anderson, director of marketing and communications at Charlotte Mecklenburg Library. Anderson is enthusiastic about the possibilities to help area children through 64U Books for Kids.
In partnership with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, WAXN-TV will collect new and gently used children and teen books from March 25 through April 21. All donated books will be distributed by the library to area children and teens through Charlotte Mecklenburg Library Outreach Services without the need to check out and return the book.
“One of the many services the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library offers is giving books, donated books, to families to have in their home, and that's why this partnership is so exciting,” Anderson said. “The book drive will allow us to collect new and gently used children and teen books which we can then distribute to families throughout Mecklenburg County.”
Anderson said that although most people think of the library as a place to check out books, the library is really about literacy. “Literacy takes many forms,” Anderson said. “Of course checking out books and using those books in the home to teach your child to read in at all stages of life is very important, but also having books in the home is really important.”
