NEWTON, N.C.,None — Two students were suspended after a hazing incident at Newton Conover High School.
The superintendent, Dr. Barry Redmond, said the incident happened inside a field house. Several members of the school's wrestling team were inside when someone turned off the lights, and a freshman was put in a wrestling hold and assaulted, officials said.
Two students were suspended and one of them was also arrested. That 10th-grader at Newton Conover High School is charged with misdemeanor simple assault.
Many of the parents Eyewitness News spoke with Tuesday had not heard of the incident but were aware of hazing by high school students.
"I hate it that kids feel like they have to go through hazing to join these athletic teams just to fit in," Grace Shelton said.
The superintendent said the school district spent several hours investigating after learning of the incident last week.
The school canceled its wrestling meet this past weekend.
Redmond wants students to understand the school district will act swiftly if they are caught.
"We want to make sure people behave and that kids can come to school are happy and safe, and focusing on learning and athletics in the proper manner," Redmond said.
