Action 9: Couple says oven wasn't installed over leaky gas valve

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Brooke Philpott and his wife, Anne, have been living off microwave food for the past two months.

That's because the gas range they bought at a discount from Sears Outlet couldn't be installed due to a leaky gas valve.

"The damage was so bad at first they said it was irreparable," Anne Philpott said.

Anne Philpott said the store attempted two unsuccessful repairs. Sears told them it would cost $700 extra because they bought the stove scratched and at a reduced price of $1,200.

Anne Philpott felt it was unfair.

"We really feel like they should cover the whole cost," she said.

The store reduced the cost to $350, but Anne Philpott still wasn't happy.

"You're a little disappointed with such a large company and such a well-known company that their customer service hasn't met our expectations," she said.

Action 9 contacted the Sears headquarters in Chicago. That's when Sears gave Anne and Brooke Philpott a new range at no extra cost.

Anne was surprised how quickly Action 9 made it happen.

"After you got involved, we got a call from the district manager was willing to work with us and kind of got us the new stove ASAP," she said.
