MOORESVILLE, N.C. — A Mooresville man said he's upset that his insurance company will not pay for the roof repairs he thinks he needs after a hail storm.
Jim Medeiros said his roof was damaged by a March hailstorm, and he's upset his insurer only approved replacing a small section of his shingles.
“What I would have, essentially, is a checkerboard roof and that is not acceptable to me,” Medeiros said.
But many of Medeiros’ neighbors are getting full roofs through their insurance companies, including the two directly across the street from him.
So, what is a homeowner to do when homes all around them have been approved for new roofs and their adjuster denies their claim?
First, nicely ask your adjuster for a second evaluation. If that doesn't work, send in photographs of where hail strikes have actually pierced your shingles.
Finally, you can demand an appraisal, in which each side chooses an appraiser and together they set the amount of the loss. If they fail to agree, an umpire will then decide.
That's how Medeiros is now handling his claim. As for what’s next if it doesn't work out in his favor, he said, “I'm definitely moving to another insurance company.”
