CHARLOTTE, N.C. — You may be putting it off because it seems overwhelming, but it doesn't have to take long to protect you and your family.
If you only gather certain things, gather these (and make it a few-day supply):
- Food (and a can opener)
- Water
- Blanket
- Flashlight
- Medicines
- Important papers
- Cash (in case ATMs don't work)
- Pet supplies
- Extra clothes

Also, prep your home. At the very least:
- Secure your yard furniture.
- Make sure your gutters and storm drains are clear.
- If you want to cover your windows, use 5/8" plywood. Taping the 'X' doesn't work.
- If you have a garage, keep it closed. If the wind gets in there, it can damage the structure of the house itself.
