The South African award winning hit musical, Africa Umoja: The Spirit of Togetherness, is playing at the Belk Theater this week, July 23 – 28. The pulsating musical is an exciting tribute to South Africa and the Zulu heritage through a vibrant blend of traditional and contemporary elements. The show has been performed for kings, queens, presidents and sold-out audiences worldwide in over 50 countries.
Audiences experience life in townships through authentic tribal dancing; joyous gospel singing; explosive drumming; funny and absolutely gut-wrenching performance. One of the highlights of the show is the tribute to Nelson Mandela which includes the song “Long Road to Freedom” written in celebration of Mandela. It’s performed by the cast to visuals of Mandela in jail on Robin Island and his release from Polsmoor Prison in 1990.
Africa Umoja runs Tuesday, July 23 through Sunday, July 28 at the Belk Theater. Tickets are on sale at www.carolinatix.org with seats available for $25.50 to $83.
