FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — State auditors in North Carolina say a company failed to properly account for more than 200 vehicles it was supposed to auction for the government.

Media outlets reported money from the sale of vehicles seized under a law to combat repeated drunken driving was supposed to go to public education.
The audit says Martin Edwards & Associates in Cumberland County was unable to properly account for 221 cars and trucks worth nearly $600,000.
The company says the audit is wrong.
Auditors said they were unable to determine whether Martin Edwards inappropriately kept or auctioned vehicles for their own profit or returned vehicles to owners.
The state said the company interfered with auditors. Martin Edward attorney Sandy Sands says the company has cooperated and thinks there are records for most vehicles.
