Bank executive struck, killed in uptown, driver charged

CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — A driver is facing charges after a pedestrian was hit and killed in uptown Charlotte Tuesday morning.

SLIDESHOW: Scene of crash

Police said Brett Morgan, 47, was walking toward the intersection of College and Stonewall streets shortly before 7 a.m. when he was hit and killed.

A commercial vehicle was in the right turn lane on westbound Stonewall, and as the light turned green for it to make a right turn, the pedestrian signal indicated it was safe to walk across College Street, investigators said. Morgan began to cross College Street in the crosswalk and was hit by the truck, according to police.

Morgan was a Wells Fargo bank executive who worked in uptown.

Morgan's family told Channel 9 that he was a father of three, a husband and a triathlete.

The driver of the truck, 57-year-old Phillip Boone, was arrested and charged with death by motor vehicle and failure to yield right of way.

Police shut down a large portion of Stonewall Street from Brevard Street up to Tryon Street for several hours as they investigated the incident. The road was reopened around 10 a.m.

Police said the crash remains under investigation and ask that anyone with information about it call detectives at 704-432-2169.
