CHARLOTTE, N.C.,None — Classes created by local companies are gaining in popularity.
In just six years, more than 100 local companies and agencies have partnered with Central Piedmont Community College.
Companies of all types are working with CPCC to create classes and programs in order to hire more and more people. Many of the programs are quick, relatively inexpensive and help make the people participating more marketable.
Three years ago, Liburdi Diametrics of Mooresville saw a need in Charlotte's manufacturing industry.
"There's been a predicted shortage of welders that's going to happen over the next few years," said General Manager John Bottoms.
For Bottoms, it meant they needed to hire. And that's where CPCC came into play.
Anver Classens is CPCC's director of applied technologies.
"We didn't have a program, we don't have a program, so we have to create a program," Classens said. "We have to get it approved by the state."
And with a grant from the U.S. Energy Department and a curriculum set up by Liburdi, classes will start this fall.
Since 2005, CPCC has partnered with more than 100 companies, businesses and agencies in the area, including Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, the Charlotte Fire Department and BMW, to create customized training programs.
For the companies, the benefit boils down to time and money. They get employees that are already trained.
And for those looking to get hired, it means a more secure job.
