CMS superintendent says first day of school was overall A-minus

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Superintendent Heath Morrison gave the first day of school an overall A-minus because he said there is always room for improvement, but Morrison said Monday was a great first start.

"It was just an extraordinary day," said Morrison.

The first day of the 2013 school year is now in the history books, and on Monday night Morrison said everything went wonderfully.

"As Super, I have some very high standards. I have had them as a teacher," he said.

There are more than 140,000 students enrolled in 160 Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.

CMS leaders said aside from a few scheduling issues, there were no major problems on the first day of class. Some families were surprised, but happy with that.

New this year, CMS implemented additional security measures at each school, such as ID badges and additional cameras.

"We want to spend a lot of time on security measures that we hope we never have to use," said Morrison.

He said he acknowledges that there is still a lot of work to be done.

Currently there 67 teacher vacancies that have to be filled.

"We could fill them tomorrow if we wanted to but we set a high standard for who gets to teach in our school district," said Morrison.
