"South Carolina needs more software developers," the SC Codes website states. "Employment in South Carolina’s technology industry expanded by an estimated 2,520 jobs in 2017 and contributed $10.8 billion to the state’s economy."

"Courses can be completed at your own pace, in your own home -- regardless of your technological background," the website states. "We have resources for students brand new to coding as well as courses for professional developers looking to add a new skill. We’ll also connect you with experienced programming mentors in your area who can offer guidance and support in-person or online. And it’s all free of charge."

Classes on the website include JavaScript concepts, Ruby Basics for web applications and front-end basics.

A kickoff information session will be held on Wednesday, April 10 from 10-11 a.m. at Blackbaud World Headquarters, 65 Fairchild Street.

It will provide an opportunity for current and prospective students, mentors, programmers, educators, business and industry leaders and innovators to connect and learn more about SC Codes.

The classes are made possible by the South Carolina Department of Commerce, the state's economic development agency that works to recruit new businesses and help existing business grow.
