Frye Regional Medical Center designated ASMBS Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence

HICKORY, N.C.,None — Frye Regional Medical Center has again been designated as an American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence.

Frye has held the distinction since 2005.

The ASMBS Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence program was started in 2004 to advance the safety, efficacy and efficiency of bariatric and metabolic surgical care.

According to the ASMBS, the designation is awarded to a hospital or institution that performs at least 125 bariatric surgeries per year, has detailed, established procedures for care of bariatric surgery patients and submits results to a national database for review and reporting.

"Earning the ASMBS Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence designation signifies our ability to consistently deliver some of the safest and highest-quality care to bariatric surgery patients," said Frye Bariatric Center Medical Director Dr. Jim Cook. "Participation has focused our team on the goal to exceed clinical benchmarks and guidelines."

"We are very proud of our designation and our multidisciplinary team that achieved this. With our commitment to excellence, we can hopefully improve the health and well-being of our patients," Frye CEO Michael Blackburn said.

In addition, Jim Cook, MD, Monty H. Cox, MD, and Jonathan A. Hata, MD, were named Fellows of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery for a period of two years.

The program serves to acknowledge surgeons who have completed their training requirements needed to practice safe and effective bariatric surgery (according to fellowship training standards established by the ASMBS).
